What is dry ice?
Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2), appearing as a pristine white solid at a chilling -78.5 ºC. It is typically converted into a colorless liquid under a hefty pressure of 62.50 bar before being swiftly solidified via low-pressure throttling and depressurization.
Physical properties: As white as snow, dry ice sublimates effortlessly at room temperature. Its high heat of vaporization means that as it sublimates at atmospheric pressure, it dramatically reduces the surrounding temperature. During this transition, dry ice causes surrounding moisture to liquefy and even condense more water from the air.
Steam, the product of water vapor droplets or tiny ice crystals clinging to airborne dust, gives rise to visible white smoke. The crystal configuration of dry ice is a simple cubic form, categorized under molecular crystals, composed of individual carbon dioxide molecules.
The dry ice's unique structure involves stacking its crystals in diverse orientations at both the vertices and centers of the cube.
Chemical properties: Dry ice is a marvel of chemical stability. It is odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable, offering no support for combustion. However, a high concentration of carbon dioxide in the air can stimulate the respiratory tract, leading to rapid breathing and potential suffocation risks.
Carbon dioxide showcases outstanding thermal stability, decomposing only 1.8% at an intense 2000 ºC. As an acidic oxide, dry ice interacts with water to form carbonic acid, integrating the characteristics of acidic oxides.
How is dry ice made?
The journey of dry ice creation begins with liquid carbon dioxide, drawn from its storage tank and released into the dry ice machine's pressing chamber. As the liquid passes through a nozzle, throttling action produces a burst of gas, carbon dioxide, alongside snowflake-like dry ice solids.
Upon amassing a sufficient quantity, the hydraulic system springs to life, pushing the piston to compact the snow-like dry ice into solid cubes, which are then extruded through the die end. At this juncture, the machine's rotating blade swings into action, breaking the elongated dry ice column into pieces.
These pieces form the desired length of dry ice pellets.
There are three guiding principles of dry ice cleaning:
Energy transfer: At high velocity, dry ice slams onto the surface, dissipating kinetic energy. With rapid heat exchange, dry ice sublimates instantly, causing dirt to chill rapidly, contract, and become brittle, priming it for removal.
Dirt is subsequently washed away.
Low temperature cracking: With distinct thermal expansion coefficients, two materials can experience weakened bonds due to temperature variance. When dry ice pellets (-78.5 ºC) strike the treated material's surface, they freeze dirt until it brittles,
causing cracks which compromise the dirt's mechanical properties, ensuring its detachment.
Micro explosion: As dry ice particles infiltrate dirt cracks, they sublimate within mere thousandths of a second, explosively expanding their volume by 600-800 times, effectively stripping dirt off the object's surface.

Akin to abrasive techniques like steel sandblasting, dry ice cleaning propels dry ice particles in a high-pressure airflow to impact the targeted surface. However, the magic of dry ice cleaning lies in its ability to vaporize instantaneously upon impact.
This unique process involves a rapid heat exchange between the dry ice and the surface, causing dry ice particles to sublimate into gas almost instantaneously, resulting in a powerful 'micro-explosion' that effectively cleans without residue.
The dramatic volume expansion of solid CO2 into gas, nearly 800-fold within milliseconds, facilitates thorough cleaning without secondary waste. It leaves only the dislodged debris behind, ready for easy collection.
Thus, the dry ice cleaning process is an environmentally conscious choice, eliminating secondary waste and ensuring only the targeted dirt is removed and collected.
